This magazine, Whingeing Pom Western Australia --
just won a prize: Australian magazine launch of the year at the Publishers Australia 2008 Bell Awards.Hope they got the message: great launch, shite mag.
About the same time, the summer season on ABC-RN (which goes on forever -- why do the routine broadcasters get such long holidays?) includes a Summer Talks series called Beyond the Anglosphere.
Now, as an Italian-Norwegian Australian who loves the English language, I'm confused.
If the Poms want to whinge, they can fuck off back home and do it.
No need to pollute our magazine shelves with their drivel.
Then, what is the Anglosphere, and how does one get "beyond" it?
I notice that all the interviewees on the ABC series speak English -- more or less.
So it can't be that.
And it can't have anything to do with the Angles, an obscure tribe who invaded a portion of an island to the West of Europe more than 1000 years ago and who have left almost no traces.
Maybe the program should be called Whingeing Wogs?
That would suit the content much better.
They might even win a prize.
Australian radio program launch of the year?
