Printer’s devilry

One downside of being a yokel is that you have to drive miles to get the necessaries. Case in point: yesterday, my printer ran out of oomph just when I needed to print my fave crossword. I had the Toner light on and the Mac Sys Prefs told me it was indeed out of ink.

So off to the smoke to get a new one. Home and duly installed, the Toner light is still on! So back again to the smoke with a query for the vendor. Not a problem, says he, we have instructions for that series of printers, and gives me an A4 page. It reads like this:

Brother HL-2xxx Manual Reset
February 09, 2012

These cartridges are different than [sic] other Brother’s [sic] in that they are equipped with a mechanism that auto resets the machines [sic] count.
Sometimes that mechanism is not triggered. When that happens, a manual reset is necessary.

1. Switch power off to the machine
2. Open the front cover
3. Hold the Go button while powering on the printer
4. When the Toner, Drum, and Error LEDs are on and the Ready LED is off, release the Go button. All of the LEDs will turn off
5. Press the Go button two (2) times. The Toner, Drum, and Error LEDs will turn on.
6. Press the Go button the appropriate number of times based on the toner cartridge model:
— TN2230 — Press the Go button six (6) times
— TN2250 — Press the Go button seven (7) times
7. When the Error LED is flashing, close the front cover.

Now why didn’t they tell me that to start with? And do I get a mileage refund?
